Talvemumm – a winter hat adventure

When Maimu looked out of the window in the morning, all she saw was a snow-white world. “Right, this is the day when Talvemumm finally gets to meet winter!” she announced solemnly. Bim, who was only just enjoying his second morning coffee (the cat version, naturally), glanced over the mug and shook his head. “You don’t need to explain to me that snow is cold. I remember last year perfectly well,” he grumbled. And off the two of them went, Maimu with Talvemumm on her head and Bim in his furry winter coat. The snow crunched beneath them in the woods, and the hat bravely stood up to the cold.

They stopped often: once because Bim had to chase a snow-tail (which later turned out to be nothing more than a lump of snow), and once because Maimu had to adjust the knot in her scarf. And although the day was crisp, their hearts were warm. After all, handicrafts can keep more than just one’s head warm; they can warm the mood too.

Talvemumm was born on a Sunday evening while the wind howled and Bim categorically refused to go outside. The yarn was a wool blend, 70% wool and 30% acrylic, soft enough not to itch and sturdy enough to hold its shape. The pattern has a dense bobbly texture reminiscent of snowballs, and the edge is double-knitted to keep the cold away from the ears. This hat is equally at home on city streets and woodland walks: elegant, but playful.

Maimu says that every Talvemumm hat becomes personal to its owner. It adapts, takes shape and begins to live a life of its own. Some say a hat “fits like a glove”, but Maimu believes a hat simply knows whose head it belongs on. Bim, on the other hand, believes hats contain a secret warming spell, and I suspect he is right.

Tiina Butiik tip: if you want to make the hat more personal, sew in a thin cotton lining. It makes it even warmer and is suitable for sensitive skin.

Maimu and Bim’s conversation:
– “Do you know you look like a little snowman in that hat?” Bim smirked.
– “Good, at least I match the season,” Maimu replied, shaking the pom-pom so that snowflakes flew around her.
– “If you start singing ‘Sajab lund’ now, I’m going back inside,” Bim growled, but carried on walking anyway.
