‘Ninasussid’ Slippers

I have no idea. I cannot even guess where that name came from. The idea and instructions are from Facebook’s Käsitöö group. I used thick sock yarn and 3 mm needles. The needles should probably have been larger, but I wanted a dense result and I knit quite tightly as well.

Row 1: edge stitch, yarn over, purl, yarn over, purl
Row 2: edge stitch, purl, yarn over, knit, yarn over, purl, knit
Row 3: edge stitch, knit, purl, yarn over, purl, yarn over, purl, knit, purl
Row 4: edge stitch, purl, knit, purl, yarn over, knit, yarn over, purl, knit, purl, knit

Between the yarn overs there is a knit stitch on the right side. I worked the yarn overs through the back loop as purl stitches so there would not be a visible row of holes. I increased on every row until there were 69 stitches on the needle. I divided them into three sections: 25–19–25. Then I changed yarn and began decreasing from the centre, shaping it like a sock heel until the side stitches were used up.

Then I picked up 11 stitches along the sides. I worked the outermost 5 stitches in garter stitch and the next 6 in stocking stitch. I continued the sole in rib. I wanted a defined ridge between the side and sole, so on right-side rows I slipped the first sole stitch without knitting, and on return rows I purled it. I continued like this almost to the end of the heel. With my yarn that was 28 rows, then I finished by shaping another sock-style heel. I also made decreases in the heel section. I like it that way and it makes the heel fit more snugly.

On the very first heel row I decreased 3 stitches together through the centre with a slip-over decrease. On the next right-side row I did not decrease in the centre; on the following two right-side rows I again decreased 3 stitches together with a slip-over decrease.

And the slipper was finished. But naturally I cannot make two things exactly alike, so I swapped the colours: where the first slipper was red, the second was black 🙂

I planned to give the slippers as a gift and decided to make them a little prettier. At first I was going to make a butterfly, but immediately got other plans for the butterfly, so I settled for a flower instead. Luckily flower-making is fresh in my hands at the moment.

Thought of it, did it, and there they were, finished 🙂
