Marjamaa Mari – Berryland Mari: a Red Macramé Bag with a Lining

Sometimes you need a bag that is both practical and eye-catching. Marjamaa Mari is exactly that – a deep-red macramé bag, with an intricate pattern and tassel that add a touch of boho charm, while its lining and zip keep everything safe and make it comfortable to use. It is a bag that brings together the unhurried rhythm of handcraft and a modern sense of style.

The bag got its name one summer morning, when Maimu whispered, “It is like a field of berries – warm, alive and brimming with life.” And so the name stayed – Marjamaa Mari, a bag that carries the feeling of summer just beginning to turn into autumn. The red brings energy and courage, yet the natural material keeps it soft. It is a lovely example of how handcraft can be strong and gentle at the same time.

The bag was created somewhere between crochet and macramé – every knot tied by hand and every part of the pattern carefully shaped. The handle is braided from the same cord, keeping the whole design harmonious and durable. The diamond pattern creates a steady rhythm across the surface and makes the bag stand out even from a distance.

What did I use?

  • Material: 3 mm red macramé cord
  • Lining: soft, dark cotton
  • Fastening: a zip – secure and durable
  • Design: macramé, diamond pattern, braided handle and decorative tassel
  • Size: approximately 34 × 25 cm

💬 A story tied with heart

When I began making Marjamaa Mari, it felt as though every knot had started living a life of its own. Some slipped straight into place; others asked to be tried again – and Bim, as always, sat beside me and watched closely. Maimu offered a quiet comment: “Add one more knot; it will bring everything into balance.” And that is how a piece came to life with both playfulness and calm woven into it.

This bag is perfect for summer days, a wander around the market or an autumn stroll through town. The red boho macramé bag is eye-catching and practical in equal measure – its firm structure holds its shape, while the lining protects everything inside. It was made to last and to bring a little joy to every day it spends by your side.

“Every knot matters,” says Maimu, “and not only in a pattern – in life as well.” Every knot in this bag holds a small memory of the moments when the quiet of making mingled with Bim’s purr and the rustle of a summer breeze at the window. Handcraft is never born in a hurry – it needs time, patience and room to breathe.

Marjamaa Mari is more than an accessory – she is a reminder that beauty is born when hands and heart work together. Keep her close when you want a little warmth of your own, or give her to someone for whom handmade means more than simply an object.
