Lepalehe Leeni – Alderleaf Leeni

Leeni does not say much. She simplysits there in the middle of the table– quiet, pale and lacy – waiting for someone to put the kettle on and slow down for a while.

Thiscrocheted cotton lace tableclothwas named“Alderleaf Leeni”for a reason. Alder is so common in Estonia that we often fail to notice its beauty. Just as we sometimes fail to notice howcalm and warma simple white tablecloth can make an entire room feel.

When Leeni was first finished, I could not bring myself to put her straight onto the table. She was like a guest for whom you want to sweep the rooms first and warm the teapot. All the other doilies suddenly seemed too talkative, too noisy. Leeni simplywas– and that was enough.

Maimu walked around grumbling, “What do you mean, a tablecloth that does not talk?” But Bim sat on it and purred, so we understood that Leeni speaks in her own language. She needs no letters or sounds. She speaks in pattern, repetition and calm. Like every grandmother who once knew how to pass feelings on through thread.

Some people say white is boring. I say white is the most honest colour. It hides nothing, pretends nothing and makes no noise. Give it a little sunlight and it shines. In the evening it falls asleep with the room. Leeni is like that too. She welcomes light and shadow as though both were guests.

Handicraft is not only skill, it is also listening. When the yarn quietly begins to release the tension and the pattern starts repeating, something happens that a machine cannot reproduce: every stitch contains a moment nobody else can copy exactly. That is what makes Leeni special. She is time itself, stored in yarn and fingers.

Leeniis the one who never pushes herself forward, yet is the one you want to be near. She does not sing, yet her silence has a sound. Just like this cloth, which does not flash or sparkle, but isgenuinely beautiful.

🧵 This is what I can tell you about the piece:

  • Name: Alderleaf Leeni
  • Diameter: approx. 61 cm
  • Material: 100% cotton crochet thread (light, airy and soft)
  • Colour: natural white
  • Technique: hand crocheted

“If this cloth were a person, she would listen to you right to the very end without interrupting once.” – Memm Maimu

Every stitch counts, especially according to Maimu.
