How I moved my blog to WordPress and nearly lost my mind

At first I rather naively thought moving a blog meant roughly:

  • export file
  • import file
  • done 🙂

Reality was, naturally, something else entirely.

The last few weeks were spent:

  • staring at WordPress importers
  • watching progress bars
  • fixing broken images
  • moving posts across by hand
  • and quietly praying to the server gods.

Some Blogger posts came across, some did not. The old WordPress brought more or less everything with it, but “more or less” is apparently an official quality standard in the WordPress world. Some images vanished, some things needed fixing, and a few less important posts simply stayed behind in the old blog.

Why did I start messing with all of this in the first place?

Because I wanted my own place on the internet.

Not merely a corner on a free platform where something might change or disappear one day, but a blog that was truly mine, my own domain and my own little world. The idea had been in my head for a long time. At one point I even got as far as trying to build my own system and editor, but eventually realised that I wanted to spend more time writing and creating, not live inside code forever.

And that is how I eventually arrived at Zone + WordPress. Whether it is temporary or permanent, time will tell 🙂

But the greatest catastrophe in the entire move was not the importer.

It was me.

I have my own product table and suddenly saving stopped working. The browser threw:
<!DOCTYPE html> is not valid JSON

A completely baffling error. We investigated:

  • fetch
  • PHP
  • JSON
  • endpoints
  • cache
  • response handling

Everything seemed technically logical.

Until the truth finally emerged.

I had copied the entire contents of tabel.html into save.php .

Ekraanipilt valesti salvestatud veebifaili sisust

Yes. Really.

The backend file contained the entire frontend table, and then I spent several days wondering why saving did not work 😄

The worst part is that when I opened save.phpin the browser, it displayed the table. But instead of thinking:
“hang on… why is a PHP file displaying an entire HTML page?”

Ekraanipilt veast, kus save.php avab tootehaldustabeli

…we moved on to increasingly complicated theories.

Sometimes a person simply gets so tired that the brain terminates its normal employment contract.

Looking back, it is funny. At the time, not so much 🙂

But in the end I did get the blog up and running, and the product-management table started saving again too 🙂

Waiting in the new home now are:

  • handicraft stories
  • crochet
  • Maimu and Bim
  • YouTube videos
  • and probably another technical nervous breakdown or two in the future.

And if anyone still thinks moving a blog is “done in a couple of clicks”, well… it is not 😄
