Curtains that taught me to use a tape measure (finally)

I bought curtains from Temu back in winter. Naturally I checked the width. The length… well, “it’ll be fine”. Spoiler: it was not. The wall is five metres wide. The window is four metres. I bought four metres of curtain and thought everything was fine. Because obviously it is perfectly normal to hang astraight curtainin front of a five-metre wall. Very aesthetic. Very logical. 🙃 I got the height just as spectacularly wrong. The room is 2.5 m high, so I thought I would buy the same length. Except the curtain pole is not on the ceiling. Nor are the hooks invisible. The result? The curtain dragged along the floor like an offended princess. I also have that “lovely” French balcony… I did not put a curtain in front of that door. It simply does not reach. I hung something I made instead, either a mandala or a dreamcatcher, you decide. I made it for Christmas, with snowflakes. …Or wait, are they actually snowflakes? Perhaps they are just little stars and my brain decided “Christmas = snow”. So now there is a seasonally confused work of art on my door. Works for me.

Anyway, I sat there looking at my trailing curtains and had that classic feeling:

why am I like this? Then came the good old wisdom: morning is wiser than evening.

In the morning I got up and took:

  • silk thread, the kind you cannot simply snap, only cut
  • a needle
  • scissors
  • a tape measure

…and got to work.

It took about an hour.

I measured the gaps at 50 cm. At first I judged the height by eye… and when I measured it afterwards, that was 50 cm too. 👉 Slightly alarming how accurate my eye actually is. Then came the moment when my brain briefly went on strike. Measuring the height is incredibly tedious. I sat there thinking:

“for fuck’s sake…”

And then –click💡 I have a radiator. I can measure down from the top edge of the radiator. The curtain is hanging anyway and the curtain pole is straight.

👉 Life became easier in a second. At that moment I decided I deserved a medal. Seriously. Not for buying anything correctly, because I did not, but becauseI did not immediately start cuttingand actually used my brain. AI has already promised me a digital medal. I am still waiting. 😄

Meanwhile, in the kitchen corner…

Bim, cat and critic:“I looked at those curtains yesterday. I said nothing. I was simply waiting for you to realise.”

Maimu, calm and wise:“Every knot that refuses to come undone teaches something. Some teach you to measure.”

Bim:“And some teach you NOT to buy blindly from Temu.”

Maimu:“Silence holds the pattern together… even in curtains.”

The final result? The curtains were fixed. My mood improved. And once again I confirmed that: 👉 a foolish head makes the body suffer 👉 but a little thinking can completely save the day.
