I am still knitting and crocheting

A little girl came up to me one day and asked what I was doing. I told her I was knitting something pretty for a lady. Then she asked, “But when are you going to make me a cardigan?” At first I was speechless, but I said that once I had finished the lady’s one, I would knit her a cardigan. After that, every time she saw me knitting, she asked when I was finally going to start hers. And every time I said, “Soon.”

I was making a birthday present for my sister. The idea and pattern came, as usual, from DROPS. I bought the yarn from Must ja Roosa, as has now become the custom. As the recipient is roughly my size, though a few centimetres taller, I worked from my own size and bought one kilo of yarn. Better to have some left, then I can make something else. According to the calculation I should have had about 200 g left, and that is exactly what happened.

I have this problem that no matter what I do, my purl stitches are looser than my knit stitches, so I had to knit the sleeves back and forth as well. The instructions clearly say double-pointed needles. Mine are only 20 cm long, though, stitches kept falling off, and the whole thing was one endless nuisance. I decided to graft the seam together so I would not get a thicker sewn seam.

I grafted the shoulders together the same way.

I bought buttons that were too small, so I had to pull the buttonholes smaller with thread to stop them opening.

I did finish it. I liked it very much myself and understood that the recipient liked it too, and it fitted. Her daughter liked it as well, so much that she wants one of her own. We shall see whether she still wants me to make it or decides to make it herself.

As there was yarn left, I thought I would make a hat too. I crocheted the hat. If it is no use anywhere else, it will at least keep the sun off while weeding the garden in summer.

Once the hat was finished I started keeping my promise and knitted the little girl a cardigan. I made it in red and white from yarn left over from my own cardigan. It took less than a week and turned out very pretty, and it fitted too.

There was still yarn left, so I made another hat. I planned a red-and-white pompom. There ended up being very little red in it because, for the first time in my life, I actually used up the yarn completely. I have an entire cupboard full of leftover scraps. There is still some white, perhaps a whole 100 g. Enough for twisted cords and whatever else 🙂 Just nothing large. The hat still needs a lining and ties.
