Õnnevoog – Flow of Happiness: a Crocheted Table Runner

Some doilies come together quickly, and then there is Õnnevoog, which flowed into being slowly, calmly and with dignity, as though life had all the time in the world. Crocheted from fine cotton thread and measuring about 125 × 56 cm, it manages to be both elegant and playful at once.

The pattern is a good old classic: the pineapple pattern. Some say it symbolises abundance and good fortune. I say it symbolises patience too, because once you make a mistake in the pattern, everything has to be unravelled and started again. Good fortune is when the next row finally comes out right!

Bim, my cat, claimed the runner as his own while it was still unfinished. Naturally, if something is soft and beautiful, one has to lie on it. Maimu, meanwhile, whispered in my ear: ‘Tiina, don’t forget, every stitch has a tiny grain of good fortune hidden inside it.’

And so it was finished, a runner that came to be called Õnnevoog. It is not simply a tablecloth, but a little keeper of good fortune. On a festive table it brings a graceful glow; on an everyday table it brings warmth and peace of mind.
