Sometimes you start a little project expecting to make a simple shawl. Then you notice the stitches multiplying and the pattern spreading until, in the end, it covers almost half a castle. That is how this shawl was born, growing as though it had decided to live a life of its own. The colours were inspired by Gypsy style: white, red and black, the same shades that have carried passion, freedom and mystery for centuries.
When the shawl was finished, it reminded me of the Brothers Grimm’sSnow White. In the story, the queen wished for a daughter who would bewhite as snow, red as blood and black as ebony. Those are exactly the three colours brought together in this shawl.
The white section glows like snow, innocent and peaceful, recalling the stillness of a winter morning. The red burns like blood, full of life, warmth and the strength of the heart. Black frames it all, bringing in the shadows and elegance of night. It is a shawl that tells two stories at once: the joy and freedom of Gypsy colour and the beauty of a fairy tale.
When the lace pattern was finally finished, it stretched across the table and beyond. The centre line down the back measures about 130 cm, while the top edge is nearly 300 cm. So large that Bim can easily hide underneath it while Maimu comments that a shawl this grand could be worn to a ball at a castle.
The hand-crocheted lace brings out the airy beauty of every thread. This is more than a shawl. Worn around the shoulders, it makes you feel like a character in a fairy tale, one moment dancing to a Gypsy song, the next waiting for a prince on a snowy balcony. Every stitch was made slowly by hand, not produced by a machine. Handmade work like this is timeless because it carries the maker’s soul within it.

🐾 Maimu and Bim send their greetings as always: one dreams of a ball, while the other checks whether the mirror is showing who is fairest of them all. If this fairy tale of yarn and colour speaks to you, come and see what the shawl looks like in real life.
