Maimu Tarkuse Puu – Maimu’s Tree of Wisdom: a Macramé Tree of Life Wall Hanging

Sometimes one big idea drags another along behind it. Once I had already given myself a proper challenge by starting with an impressive door curtain, I felt I needed something smaller too, something that would fit into any room. That is how I found my way to wall hangings, and honestly, I don’t think you can ever have too many trees of life.

To me, handmade macramé wall hangings like these are a warm touch. They give a room something that is hard to put into words: cosiness, warmth, a feeling of home. It is like an invisible thread that ties the room together and makes it a better place to be.

As my hands worked the knots and loops, I kept thinking that every branch and little leaf on the tree was a small story of its own. And where there is a story, naturally there must be characters too.

🐾 Bim immediately decided it was his new guard post. He sat directly underneath it and made sure no loop tried to escape. If a cord so much as misbehaved, he had his eye on it.

🧶 Maimu of course smiled and said, ‘Come now, Bim, those are my knots. Every one of them holds both threads and people together.’ And there they sat, quietly debating who had the greater claim: the one guarding or the one tying.

I looked at the two of them and thought that this really is the point of it all: making something that holds things together. Not only yarn and knots, but our own stories and homes too.

✨ A Tree of Life on the wall is more than a decoration. It is a sign that a home is breathing.

And my tree of life was given a name: ‘Maimu’s Tree of Wisdom’. This wall hanging holds together both threads and stories, and reminds us that every knot contains a little wisdom and the warmth of home.

If anyone feels like making a similar tree of life, the work itself is not difficult, but it does take patience and good cord. I used 3 mm cotton macramé cord and a round frame. Each knot needs to be tied calmly and with a sure hand, because if you rush, the tree never quite comes alive. And that sense of ‘life’ is the most important thing: the wall hanging should not merely be an object, but a feeling.

Sometimes the work even gets left half-finished because life gets in the way. But when you finally attach the last leaf, you realise that every pause was needed. A tree of life grows at its own pace, just as we do.
