Some evenings simply arrive all by themselves. Without being pushed, without being waited for.
Like a stranger knocking at the door who turns out to have been an old friend all along.
That is exactly how this baby cardigan slipped into the room, soft and brown, with its crocheted shawl collar like a little cheerful message from autumn.

I had just arranged it on the table when two members of the household decided an inspection was required.
Naturally, they were Maimu and Bim, my personal quality-control committee, where one is warm and the other furry.

Maimu: ‘Now that is a lovely cardigan.’
Bim (looking slightly offended): ‘Quite. And I’m not even allowed to sit on it.’
The room suddenly felt a little warmer. A conversation between those two suits any evening,
like a pillow that has become cool at exactly the right moment.
After praise from those two, nothing more is really needed.
Sometimes life is that simple: a beautiful thing, a little laugh, a cat taking elegant offence.
And me, grateful for that small piece of quiet that sometimes simply arrives on its own.
