I made one for my mother’s hall window and one for my mother-in-law’s kitchen window. But those were medium-sized. Now, after finishing the renovation of my room, I decided to crochet a curtain for my own window. The window is about two metres wide and perhaps 1.5 metres high. Clearly the curtain had to be larger.

After the renovation, one wall in my room now looks like this… I like it. I think I did rather well.

And this is what is on another wall. I like it, and that is what matters.

Work is what it is at the moment: I stand in one place for a few hours, then somewhere else, and what else is there to do while waiting but handicraft? I dare say 90% of this curtain was made in the car. But it was obvious that a whole curtain would fit neither in the glove compartment nor in the box between the seats, so I knew I had to make it in panels. I plunged into the internet looking for an idea. Eventually I landed on Pinterest and found the pattern there, made in panels just as I had imagined. To stop it becoming mind-numbingly boring to crochet the same thing over and over, I looked for different patterns on the same theme. I calculated the width as three wider panels and two narrower ones. I ordered strips of wood from my son to make a blocking frame.

Pattern for the wider panel

Pattern for the narrower panel

A separate little bird for the top of the narrow panel.

As the pattern for the narrow panel is shorter, I decided to add another bird from a different pattern at the top.

From this bird I left out the leaf on the left and made only the flower on the right with its stem and one leaf. I also left out everything by the tail apart from the cornflower-like shape on the left.

For the wider panel I made 141 stitches and for the narrower one 93. That is 70 squares and 46 squares. I crocheted the panels together with a zigzag join, using instructions I found on the Drops website.

Crocheting the panels together

Naturally everything did not go smoothly. I had crocheted the panels together and added fringe along the bottom, a major mistake. Why did I spread the curtain out on the floor? Some sort of instinct, probably.

It turned out I had joined two wide panels together, when the order was supposed to be wide-narrow-wide-narrow-wide. I undid it and put it right. That took about an hour.

A fool’s life is meant to be difficult.

I fixed that mess, washed it and stretched it on the frame.

Naturally I had wanted narrow wooden strips, with the result that the top strip bowed. Never mind, it stretched overnight and the next day up it went at the window. But disaster… too narrow. I realised I needed to crochet two more narrow panels.

Too narrow.

Nothing for it, I crocheted them. Another couple of weeks before it was completely finished. Then it became so wide that the wooden strips were too short. I hung the curtain up and used an old curtain pole as a weight along the bottom. This time I also had potato starch, so I gave it a light starching. It stretched in length, but I did not like the width. I took it down, folded it in half on the floor, sprayed it with water and started stretching it with the iron. It stretched sufficiently in both width and length and could have stretched even more. Next time I need longer and thicker wooden strips. But I finished it. Or almost. Earlier I said the fringe was a big mistake. It was.

I decided to braid the fringe and put a bead or something on each end.
