One day I was reminded that we were going to a birthday party. My sister\u2019s son\u2019s son was turning four. When I asked about a present, the first answer was that he did not need anything, then a little later that he likes cars and would be delighted with even the tiniest model. Right then, so be it. But I cannot accept turning up without something made by my own little hands. I spent two days roaming the internet and then went idea-hunting on the Drops website. I considered making a toy and all sorts of other things, but in the end it was a cardigan. That was on Sunday. I ordered yarn as well, collected it early Monday morning and could start knitting. The problem was that it was summer and there was much more work than at other times. No waiting around, no knitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, the yarn wasDROPS Karisma<\/a>, 300 g light brown, which looks more grey to me, 50 g denim blue and 50 g dark brown. I followed the pattern for the stitch count and even used the recommended needle size. Naturally that did not work for me again, so I knitted the ribbing on 2 mm needles and the cardigan on 3 mm. That gave me the stitch count for age three to four and the measurements for age five to six. At one point I started wondering whether the child was actually turning four or five. If it had been five I could have made it a little larger, with room to grow. But he really was turning four and when I saw him I realised the size looked right. Naturally I have never seen it on him. These days perhaps it is no longer customary to open presents and show them to everyone. Later at home, in private. That is fine too, but at least I heard that his mum liked it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the sleeves, as I did not have my 2 mm needles with me, I started with 36 stitches and knitted so tightly that it was difficult to move the yarn on the needle. That is a miserable way to knit. After the ribbing I immediately increased by ten stitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday was the day the cardigan had to be finished. On Wednesday I completed the back and started a sleeve. I knitted as much as I could at work, came home and finished the sleeve. On Thursday I got up early because I still had to knit the second sleeve and embroider the little lines onto the body pattern. The sleeve took three hours, to be precise two hours and 57 minutes. Then I steamed everything and embroidered the crosses. I left sewing it together and knitting the collar for work; I simply had to find the time somehow. While steaming it, though, I discovered a dreadful mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us put it this way: there was no time left to fix it, so I comforted myself with the thought that one piece is the front and the other the back. They will never be side by side as they are in this photo, so perhaps nobody will notice. An embroidery mistake. That is what rushing does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cardigan uses charts M.4 and M.5. I had thought about making a hat too, but there was no time left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So which is it really, grey or light brown? Even the phone photographs it differently, as if it cannot decide what colour it is either. On the Drops site it looks grey to me, and my yarn, despite being labelled light brown, was definitely grey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
