Every leaf was crocheted from yarn, stitch by stitch, working from the centre outwards.

I named this piece Leaf Mandala because of the repeating leaf-like shapes in its centre. As the mandala grew, the pattern gradually became more and more visible. At first, you’re looking at just a few rounds of crochet, without really knowing what the finished piece will look like. Then comes another round, and another, and another, until suddenly, a whole delicate lace mandala has emerged from a simple strand of yarn.

That’s exactly what I love about crocheting: the work grows slowly, but every new round changes the picture. Sometimes you have to count stitches, sometimes you need to check what you’ve already done, and occasionally you have to unravel a few rows. That’s how handmade work goes. The finished piece may look delicate and peaceful, but behind it are hours of work, careful attention, and quite a few moments of wondering, “Did I actually do that correctly?”

🌿 Why a Leaf Pattern?

The leaf shapes give the mandala a sense of movement. Arranged in a circle around the centre, they form a repeating pattern that, when viewed as a whole, can resemble a flower, the sun, or a delicate ring of lace leaves, depending on who’s looking.

I like how the same pattern can remind different people of different things. I see leaves. Someone else might see flower petals or perhaps a little swirling sun. Handmade creations don’t always have to mean exactly the same thing to everyone.

🧶 A Mandala Grows from the Centre Outwards

Crocheting a mandala like this begins in the centre. Each new round builds on the previous one, and the pattern gradually expands. This means you have to stay focused right until the end. If you miss a stitch or a pattern repeat, the next round will usually let you know soon enough.

Crocheting may be relaxing, but yarn shows no mercy. If the stitch count doesn’t add up, even the deepest inner peace won’t save you. You’ll have to find the mistake and, if necessary, unravel your work.

A finished mandala can be used as a home decoration. You can place it on a table, frame it, or hang it on a wall, depending on its size and where it looks best. The delicate lace pattern stands out particularly well against a background that allows the leaf shapes and other details to be clearly seen.

🎥 Another Crocheted Mandala

Leaf Mandala isn’t the only mandala I’ve crocheted. I also found an old short video on my YouTube channel showing another delicate lace mandala.

You can spot leaf-like shapes in the centre of this one, too. The video may be short, but I can assure you that making the mandala took considerably longer than 24 seconds. If I could crochet them that quickly, I’d be mass-producing mandalas by now, with plenty of time left over to enjoy a peaceful cup of coffee.

Two crocheted mandalas can look completely different, but the basic principle remains the same: you start in the centre, repeat the pattern, and watch as a simple strand of yarn gradually transforms into a complete piece.

And that transformation is exactly what makes crocheting so fascinating.

‘When life gets tangled, we crochet a new pattern into it,’ says Maimu.
Bim adds slyly: ‘I do the quality control.
