As far as he was concerned, balls of yarn had an entirely different purpose from knitting socks and jumpers.

“Bim, leave that yarn alone! We’re trying to have a knitting lesson here,” Maimu scolded.

Bim made no promises. 🐈

And that’s how our little knitting school begins, with Grandma showing you how to cast on stitches, knit ribbing, cast off your work and eventually even master double-pointed needles.

Knitting begins with two needles and a ball of yarn. Well, and a little patience too, because those stitches don’t always stay on the needles where they’re supposed to, especially at first. 😁

Over the years, I’ve made a few knitting tutorials for my YouTube channel. Now I’ve decided to bring them together in one place, so anyone interested in learning to knit won’t have to go hunting for them all over the internet.

Here are four tutorials to help you get started.

🧶 1. Casting On, Knit and Purl Stitches

First, we need to cast on our stitches. Then we’ll learn how to knit and purl. These are the two basic techniques that form the foundation of many knitting patterns.

🧶 2. Knitting Rib Stitch

Once you’ve mastered knit and purl stitches, you can start combining them.

Ribbing is often used for the cuffs and edges of socks, gloves, hats and jumpers. It helps knitted items keep their shape.

🧶 3. Casting Off Your Knitting

Eventually, your knitting is finished, but the stitches are still on the needle. You can’t simply pull the needle out, or all your hard work might unravel.

In this video, I’ll show you how to cast off your stitches and give your knitting a neat, finished edge.

🧶 4. Knitting with Double-Pointed Needles

Once you’ve got the hang of knitting with two needles, you can try double-pointed needles.

At first, working with five needles might feel like a proper tangle of fingers and knitting needles, but with a little practice, you’ll get the hang of that too.

❤️ Practice Makes Perfect

Don’t worry if your first stitches are too tight, too loose or completely uneven. Knitting is a skill that improves with practice.

And if something goes wrong, you can always unravel your work and start again. The yarn won’t complain. I certainly have complained on occasion, but it hasn’t made the stitches behave any better. 😁

Happy knitting!

Pits, Plaan ja Pets

</trp-tag>

Grandma Maimu got her knitting needles ready, gathered up her balls of yarn and decided it was time to start teaching knitting.
